Background of the Study
Online plagiarism detection tools have become crucial for academic integrity, serving as both a deterrent against plagiarism and a means to guide proper citation practices. At University of Maiduguri, these tools are integrated into the library system to assist students and faculty in ensuring the originality of their work (Usman, 2023). The integration of these tools into the research process has a direct impact on the overall user experience (UX), influencing how users interact with academic materials and manage research documentation. Enhanced usability, timely feedback, and detailed similarity reports are features that contribute to improved research quality and academic rigor (Adamu, 2024). However, if the system is overly complex or produces inconclusive results, it may frustrate users and hinder academic productivity. Therefore, this study assesses the effectiveness of online plagiarism detection tools in enhancing UX by analyzing aspects such as ease of use, feedback accuracy, and overall satisfaction within the academic community (Bello, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the implementation of online plagiarism detection tools at University of Maiduguri, users have encountered several issues that negatively impact their experience. Challenges include complicated interfaces, delayed processing times, and occasional inaccuracies in similarity detection (Usman, 2023). These factors not only diminish user confidence but also affect the timely completion of academic tasks. Inconsistent results and the need for multiple revisions have raised concerns about the reliability of these tools. This study seeks to identify the key operational challenges and their impact on UX, thereby providing a basis for recommending enhancements aimed at streamlining functionality and improving overall user satisfaction (Adamu, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the accuracy of online plagiarism detection tools.
To assess user satisfaction with the system’s interface and response time.
To propose improvements for a more efficient user experience.
Research Questions:
How accurate are the plagiarism detection results?
What are the primary usability issues faced by users?
How can the system be improved to enhance overall UX?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the impact of online plagiarism detection tools on academic user experience, addressing both technical and operational shortcomings. The findings will guide developers and library administrators in refining these tools to improve accuracy, usability, and user satisfaction. Enhanced UX in plagiarism detection is expected to foster a more rigorous academic environment and support research integrity (Bello, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining online plagiarism detection tools at University of Maiduguri and does not cover other academic integrity measures.
Definitions of Terms:
Plagiarism Detection Tools: Software used to identify unoriginal content in academic work.
